 A 2MW peak process heat requirement could be served by a total of 3600 m2 aperture area of Industrial Solar’s Fresnel collector.  The collector is connected to a storage unit which allocates the heat to serve a manufacturing process and / or an absorption chiller for air-conditioning the building.  The boiler is included as a backup solution to generate heat in case of a cloudy day or production during a night shift.

Attractive economics

Solar process heat solutions provide attractive payback times in many applications and – contrary to increasing fossil fuel prices – constant and projectable energy costs.

Long-term investments, like buildings or energy systems, have a significantly lower risk profile and contribute to long-term cost savings.  Consequently these investments should be evaluated from a broader lifetime cost perspective.  A commonly used criterion for long-term economic feasibility of an investment is the internal Rate of Return (IRR), which is defined as the discount rate that equates future net benefits (cash) to an initial investment outlay.  This discount rate can be compared to the interest rate at which a company borrows capital.

For a typical solar process heat solution based on Industrial Solar’s Fresnel collector the IRR, depending on the assumed energy price increase and lifetime at a moderate location, the internal rate of return is between 5% and 30% with payback times between 4 to 10 years.  Considering only the operational and maintenance costs, solar thermal energy prices with the innovative Fresnel collector remain stable on a very low level at 1-2$ Cent/kWh depending on the location an collector size.
